Suurbraak
Suurbraak - General Information
Suurbraak is a small village just outside of Swellendam off the N2 on the R324, en-route to the Tradouw Pass and Barrydale. Located in the Overberg region at the foot of the beautiful Langeberg Mountain range, Suurbraak is a great escape from busy city life.
The village was established in 1812 by the London Missionary Society and today still has some restored historical buildings evident.
There is not much to do in Suurbraak other than relax and absorb the majestic mountains and green fields. A hiker and mountain bikers paradise there are plenty of walks in and around Suurbraak, either along the river or up into the mountain. The village can also be explored via a cart ride – fun for kids!
Life in the village is slow-paced with friendly locals and inviting eateries. Just off the main town square there is the original church building and a school both built by the missionary society. Visitors will find that traditional farming methods are still used in Suurbraak including using sheep to “mow” the lawns!
