One of the most exciting things about this competition - presented by the Garden Route Casino on the last weekend of September to coincide with South Africa’s national Tourism Month – is the fact that it serves as an annual showcase for the amazing talents of dress designers from the region.

And it’s worth attending for the fashion as much as to celebrate the competition’s social agenda: support for the work of shelters for women and children in Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay, George, and Knysna.

The designers who dress the contestants work to a different theme each year: ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in 2012, ‘A Tribute to Deon Oelofse’ in 2013 (Deon won the design award at the first Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo pageant in 2003) – so you might not necessarily see any wedding dresses on the catwalk if you’re in the audience this year.  But you will get a very good idea of the breadth and depth of the talent in this part of the country - so you’re bound to find the one person who’ll make you shine.
