Plettenberg Bay is truly the jewel of The Garden Route and was originally christened “Bahia Formosa”, meaning Beautiful Bay, by early Portuguese explorers.
This jewel is situated 210 kms from Port Elizabeth and +/- 600 km from Cape Town, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

The delicate pansy shell is endemic to this part of the coast, and is used as the symbol representing the town. Looking for these treasures on the beach is a popular activity amongst visitors and locals alike.

Plett offers the visitor miles of sweeping beaches, the dramatic Robberg peninsula, intriguing lagoons and estuaries, indigenous forests and unpolluted rivers and sea.

15 km of golden beaches stretch from Keurboomstrand to the Robberg Peninsula interrupted by the river mouth and an island.  Here the river, lagoon and beaches are an absolute paradise for fishing and boating enthusiasts as the area offers the best shore based whale watching of the area.

Besides the magnificent Indian Ocean, it offers visitors more than 15 private and public nature reserves.

The massive Robberg Nature Reserve is the perfect spot for whale and dolphin viewing, bird watching, hiking trails and exploring the Nelson Bay Cave. The Robberg is a must see for all visitors and the Robberg Peninsula is home to a large Cape fur seal colony, which can often be seen in the surf off Robberg Beach.

Plettenberg Bay has a very rich marine life, with schools of playful dolphins regularly surfing the waves off the local beaches. Whale watching is a very popular attraction during the months July to December. Boat-based tours are available as well as marine safaris which provide a chance to see these gentle giants up close.

The tranquil little village of Wittedrift is situated between the hills covered with indigenous fynbos and the Bitou River and is a bird and nature lover’s paradise

At night Plettenberg Bay is alive with pubs, night-spots and fine restaurants; and after an eventful, fun day one can be assured of a wide range of accommodation from luxury hotels, exclusive country retreats, cosy bed and breakfasts, self-catering chalets and excellent camping facilities where one can rest before the next adventure.
